[english translation]
Drinking songs are a fertile vein in Celtic music, “pub songs”, which are sung just when the alcohol content exceeds that permitted by law! Humorous songs that praise alcohol and rarely focus on the problem of alcoholism.
The topic is not always explicitly about alcoholic beverages, they are rather popular melodies, which trigger humours appropriate to the various levels of alcohol levels reached by the diners, and thus include stories of vagrants and impenitent womanizers, but also nostalgic stories of distant loves, stories friendship, emigration or patriotic songs.
So a song is considered more properly a “pub song” when:
- it is very popular, or at least popular in the area where the pub resides
- it is sentimental or humorous
- it talks about drinking
