Pescatori & affini (Fisher and Whaler songs)

The fishermen’s songs (and women) from the coastal celtic countries and the lake regions in Terre Celtiche Blog.
Once upon a time all the coastal villages in British Isles and the coasts of Europe lived by fishing or by gathering cockle/sea-dulse; small villages built around a protected harbour, where fishing activity is now marginal compared to tourism.

THE FISHERMEN’S SONGS: ROWING SONGS

The fishermen’s songs are very old and often are in Gaelic, simply called iorram, they are rowing songs to give the rhythm to the rowers. An iorram was sung by the man at the helm, while the rowers accompanied him in the choir.
It could have been an invocation or a song of protection from the spirits of the sea, as a lament

THE FISHERMEN’S SONGS: WHALING SONGS

The whaling songs are forebitter songs in the form of a ballad tell of an exhausted crew, burnt or frozen depending on the adverse and extreme climatic conditions.
Typically a whaling song tells of real or fictional events of an expedition or whaling.

Sea Songs (of women)

Some sea songs are women chants who stay at home and they address their prayers, spells or petitions to the sea, or they complain about the separation from the husband / sweetheart boarded on ships hunting for whales (the engagements lasted at least six months) or they express the desire to embark with their love.
