Celtic Canada: Terranova

Terranova è una grande isola di fronte alla costa orientale del Canada, ma è anche una provincia del Canada Orientale denominata più estesamente Terranova e Labrador (Newfoundland and Labrador)

Newfoundland is a large island facing the east coast of Canada, but it is also a province of Eastern Canada called Newfoundland and Labrador.

E’ Terranova la Vinland dei Vichinghi, la terra dei pascoli, un dato storico ormai assodato, dopo la scoperta archeologica di tombe vichinghe risalenti al XI secolo nell’Anse aux Meadows , in italiano “la baia delle meduse”, la parte più settentrionale di Terranova. Così come narrano le saghe, i primi esploratori dell’America furono i vichinghi del X secolo, più incerta è l’esatta ubicazione della terra battezzata Vinland che alcuni storici collocano più a Sud ovvero a Capo Cod.

It is the Vinland of the Vikings, the land of the pastures, a well-established historical fact, after the archaeological discovery of Viking tombs dating back to the eleventh century in the Anse aux Meadows, the northernmost part of Newfoundland. As the sagas narrate, the first explorers of America were the Vikings of the tenth century, in discussion it is the exact location of the land named Vinland that some historians place more to the south (Cape Cod).

La maggior parte degli abitanti sono emigrati soprattutto dall’Irlanda, dall’Inghilterra e dalla Scozia e un tempo era considerata la quinta provincia d’Irlanda. Il dialetto di Terranova è un misto di inglese e irlandese con espressioni non standard assolutamente originali dell’isola, come pure l’accento. L’inglese-canadese ha negli abitanti di Terranova un accento che a parere di molti ricorda la campagna dell’Inghilterra Occidentale (Devon e Cornovaglia) o dell’Irlanda.

Most of the inhabitants emigrated mainly from Ireland, England and Scotland and were once considered the fifth province of Ireland. The Terranova dialect is a mixture of English and Irish with absolutely original non-standard expressions of the island, as well as the accent. The English-Canadian has an accent in the inhabitants of Newfoundland that in the opinion of many remember the countryside of Western England (Devon and Cornwall) or Ireland.

MUSICA TRADIZIONALE (Folk Music)

Come la lingua anche la musica è un mix dei tre paesi simile ma differente. Le prime registrazioni di musica tradizionale datano al 1970 soprattutto tramite il lavoro di Aidan O’Hara, radiofonico e folclorista che tracciò una poderosa ricerca musicale registrando una memoria collettiva ancora vicina alla terra natia: gli strumenti tradizionali sono violino e fisarmonica/organetto, ma anche chitarra, banjo e bouzouki; tra le curiosità l’Ugly Stick un buffo bastone che viene dalla tradizione del mumming decorato con cimbali .
Preferite tra i tunes di danza le jig con le caratteristiche single e double jig.

Like the language, music is also a mix of the three similar but different countries. The first recordings of traditional music date back to 1970 mainly through the work of Aidan O’Hara, who traced a powerful musical research recording a collective memory still close to the homeland: the traditional instruments are violin and accordion, but also guitar, banjo and bouzouki; among the curiosities the Ugly Stick is a funny stick that comes from the tradition of mumming.

LE TOP – La Penisola di Avalon, circa 10.000 chilometri quadrati di superficie, si protende nell’Oceano Atlantico all’estremità sudorientale dell’isola di Terranova, cui è collegata mediante uno stretto istmo tra le baie di Trinity e Placentia. Secondo il sondaggio del National Geographic Traveler la penisola canadese offre il litorale più bello del pianeta. Nel suo numero di novembre la rivista americana elogia soprattutto l’«integrità culturale» degli itinerari costieri, i coloratissimi villaggi di pescatori e lo sviluppo turistico che ha conservato il carattere originale della regione. In its November issue, the American magazine especially praises the “cultural integrity” of coastal routes, the colorful fishing villages and the tourist development that has preserved the original character of the region.
