Spesso in gaelico, sono canti che affondano le loro radici nel Medioevo.
Sono composizioni musicali in versi molto semplici e ripetitivi con un ritmo ben scandito.
Tra i Christmas Carols possiamo annoverare una serie di ninna-nanne dalle origini medievali ancora oggi nei repertori delle Corali e nelle compilation di musica natalizia; dette anche Cradle songs sono canti semplici, evocativi di un intimo momento tra Maria e Gesù.

Per far dormire o per calmare il dolore, oppure il racconto per intrattenere e divertire o per insegnare come comportarsi nel mondo degli adulti.
Per i bambini sono diventati scioglilingua per far la conta o parte dei giochi in girotondo.
Le ninna-nanne sono composizioni non insolite in Galles, Scozia e Irlanda tanto per contraddire l’infelice frase (detta da un inglese) “I Celti non hanno ninne nanne: sono troppo bellicosi.” (A.P. Graves)
