Christ Child’s Lullaby/ Taladh Chriosda

[English translation]
“Christ Child’s Lullaby” is a traditional Scottish song from the Hebrides, also called Taladh Chriosda (Tàladh ar Slànaigheir in english “The Lullaby of our Savior”)
A melody from the Isle of Barra to the extreme North of Scotland: a melody that is lost in the mists of time and that even today the local women sing as a Christmas spell of protection to the men of the village gone out to sea; this lullaby therefore serves to put the sea to sleep because it remains calm and its rythm reminds us of the placid movement of the waves.
The text in Gaelic was written in 1855 by Father Ranald Rankin of Fort William for the children of Moidart (before leaving for Australia) on the melody Cumha Mhic Àrois (in english “the Lament for Mac Àrois”) and in its original version has 29 verses; it is sung during midnight mass on Christmas Eve. The song has become popular by the transcription of Marjory Kennedy Freser with the title “Christ Child’s Lullaby“. Like all songs rooted in popular tradition, it has many textual variations.

Ach chualas ainglean sòlasach
Toirt glòir don Tì as àird’.

Mo ghaol an t-sùil a sheallas tlath!
Mo ghaol an chridhe tha liont’ le gràdh!
Ged as leanabh Thu gun chàil,
Is lìonmhor buaidh tha ort a’ fàs
