Non si hanno molte informazioni in merito alla canzone che si ritiene provenga dall’Irlanda del Nord, (Strabane è nella contea di Tyrone quasi al confine con la Repubblica d’Irlanda) e risalga al 1840: l’amore non corrisposto diventa motore di emigrazione come già in “Moorlough shore“.
Alcuni identificano la bella Martha con Martha Ramsay e così scrive Sam Henry [che ha pubblicato il brano in “Songs Of The People”1928]: “The song tells of a draper’s assistant named MacDonald who sought in vain the hand of his employer’s daughter, Miss [Martha] Ramsay, of Strabane. The song is about 80 years old [c.1848]. It was first published in a Derry newspaper by Dan McAnew in 1909.”

Del brano esistono molte varianti (anche raccolte sul campo a Terranova con il titolo “Flower Of Sweet Stravan” inMacEdward Leach And The Songs Of Atlantic Canada 2004 Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive -MUNFLA) su una melodia univoca o piuttosto simile.
In alcune versioni le strofe sono appena tre e non viene riportata la parte in cui il protagonista decide di emigrare per l’America oppure come in questa versione di Inishowen il terzo verso dice:
“Now I’ll go over the Lagan down by the big ship tall My ship is bound for Americay no matter what may befall My ship is bound for Americay right by the Isle of Man So I’ll bid farewell and God bless you my flower of sweet Strabane”
