Cold Song from beds of everlasting snow

[English translation]
The months of December and January are, in our latitudes, the months of the snow, the bitter cold and the frosts. The air is clearer, the cold is intense but invigorating, the snow muffles sounds and feelings. These are also the months of rheumatic pains, slippery falls on the ice, dangers in the streets and in the mountains, when you prefer to stand by the fire or under the covers drinking chocolate or mulled wine.

A perfect frame for listening to “Cold Song” (= “Song of the cold”) an experimental work by Sting for his winter CD “If on a Winter’s Night” (2009) in which the artist sums ancient and modern carols , traditional passages and excursions in the operatic world. Sting had approached baroque music with an amazing previous CD on John Dowland’s lute compositions titled “Songs from the Labyrinth” (2006), so “Cold Song” is the “What Power art thou” from semi-opera “King Arthur” (the first musical opera in history that bears the date 1691) on music by Henry Purcell and libretto by John Dryden, the greatest musician and the greatest poet of the English Restoration.

What Power art thou

“What Power art thou” is sung in Act III by the Genius of the Cold, awakened by Cupid who tries instead to bring the warmth of the passions into the inhabitants of a frozen world.

Lasciami, lasciami congelare ancora,

What Power (1) art thou who from below
Hast made me rise unwillingly and slow
From beds of everlasting snow?
See’st thou not how stiff
and wondrous old,
Far unfit
to bear the bitter cold,
I can scarcely move or draw my breath?
Let me, let me freeze again
to death
(1) Power in this context indicates the power of a deity, its magical and supernatural power: it is Cupid the God of Love to awaken from its ice sheet the Genius of Frost

Sting  in “If On a Winter’s Night” 2009

the promo scenes were shot on his estate in Chianti (Figline Valdarno): 300 hectares with a large 16th century manor house, a hill, 6 lakes, vineyards and olive groves (you can rent the villa for weddings and private ceremonies see)

Although the song was written for a bass voice, the performances I prefer are those of contralto voices – countertenor
