An Seanduine Dóite

An Seanduine Dóite is an Irish Gaelic song that touches on a humorous theme with a bitter background, that of the mismatched marriage between a young girl and an old man.

This song, part tragic, part grimly amusing, with a surprise in its last line, has sometimes been attributed to Andrew Magrath, the County Limerick poet … It is reasonably certain, however, that the attribution is erroneous. It is an eighteenth century folk song of Munster origin, which has doubtless been subjected to many alterations and accretions, and versions of which have been noted as far away as County Mayo. At the period of its composition Scottish airs were very popular in Ireland, particularly with the Munster poets, and this song is said to have been written to the tune of “The Campbells are Coming”. It is interesting to note the profound modifications which the tune has undergone at the hands of the Irish folk singers.
[Donal O’Sullivan from ‘Songs of the Irish’ ]

(vedi prima parte)

Comhairle a fuaireasa amuigh ar an mbóthar
Ó rógaire sagairt an seanduine a phósadh
Ach ba chuma leis siúd ach go méadóinn a phóca
Is go mbeinn fad a mhairfinn ag brath ar na comharsainn

Chorus (after each verse):
Ó dheara ‘sheanduine, leatsa ní gheobhadsa
Ó dheara ‘sheanduine, loscadh is dó ort
Ó dheara ‘sheanduine, leatsa ní gheobhadsa

I
Got an advice out on the road
From a rogue of a priest to marry an old man
But all he cared for was filling his pocket
And that I’d be till I died
depending on neighbours
O yerra, old man, being with you is not for me
O yerra, old man, may you be scorched and burned
O yerra, old man, being with you is not for me
And if I were next door I wouldn’t catch you alive

II
I went to Cork to look for arrangements for a wake
Tobacco pipes and wood for a coffin
On my return home, sick, tired and sad
Where did I find my old man but roasting bacon
III
If I were to find my old man drowned in a boghole
His legs broken and his bones in pain
I’d take him home and I’d wake him
And I’d walk out with the young boys
IV
If you marry an old man, you will marry a rogue
Who will leave rags before you on the stairs
In the morning he’ll be complaining with roguery
And in the evening he’ll be merrily playing music
V
I married an old man, I had no sense
I did that on the advice of my relatives
I went home with him, sad is the story
And I got up in the morning preferring to be dead
O yerra, old man, being with you is not for me
O yerra, old man, may you be scorched and burned
O yerra, old man, being with you is not for me
And a couple of Sundays will put you under the sod

I

e me ne andrei a spasso con i ragazzi giovani
IV
