Sean-nós style
Sean-nós (in English “old style”) is the traditional Irish way of singing only with the voice and characterized by particular vocal embellishments.
There are four main styles corresponding to the areas of Gaeltachtaí: west of Munster (West Munster style, Kerry and Cork), east of Munster (East Munster style Waterford), Connacht (Connemara style, Connemara and Meath) and Ulster ( Donegal style). They are social and work accompanying songs that express the emotions of the singer (mostly love, but also sadness for the death of a relative or for emigration) or local historical events (in particular political rebellions); they are also lullabies (because the woman, while taking care of the house and working at home, can also look after the children), but also comic songs seasoned with irish humor and “drinking song”!
