[English translation]
The melody of “Carol of the Bells” comes from the Ukrainian Shchedryk traditionally sung on New Year’s Eve and the feast of the Epiphany. The text in the original language, however, speaks of a swallow that wishes the landlord a prosperous new year, echo of ancient times when the new year was celebrated at the arrival of spring: probably it was part of the ritual songs of begging , sung by groups of young people, who at the end of the year, wished a happy New Year going from house to house.
In 1916 the Russian composer Mykola Leontovych made a musical arrangement for chorus, but only in 1921 the Ukrainian National Choir made this song known in America and in Europe. The tune is based on the repetition of only 4 notes (the technical term is called ostinato) according to a so-called primitive compositional method.
Shortly afterwards in the 1930s the American composer Peter Wilhousky wrote the English text “Carol of the Bells” inspired by the tolling of the bells and later in 1947, Minna Louise Holman also wrote an alternative text in English called Ring, Christmas Bell, the favorite christmas choral anthem. In addition to the titles already mentioned, the song is also known as “Ukrainian Carol” or “The Ukrainian Bell Carol” but also “Shtchedrik (A Christmas Carol).”

Buon Buon Buon Buon Natale
Ascolta come tutte le campane, sembrano dire:
” E’ arrivato il Natale, Natale è qui
canti di buon augurio”
Ascolta come tutte le campane,
sembrano dire:
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Hark how the bells, how the bells All seem to say
“Christmas is here, Christmas is here, is here
Songs of good cheer”
Hark how the bells, how the bells
All seem to say, seem to say
Christmas is here, Christmas is here, is here
While people sing Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Moya Brennan
the opening whispered by the harp in the winter wind repeated by the electronic echo of the keyboard, immediately develops in crescendo with the obsessive chant that repeats the same stanza with few repeated verses and the violin that seems to invite to jig; beautiful instrumental phrasing between bagpipe and guitar
