Yon Burn Side: We’ll meet beside the dusky glen

Also with the title “The Dusky Glen” or “We’ll meet beside” here is the remake of Robert Tannahill of “The brier bush” (There grows a bonie brier bush) published by Johnson in the “Scots Musical Museum” already attributed to the pen by Robert Burns.
The melody The Brier Bush was arranged by RA Smith

Ian Anderson in The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill Volume I  (2006)

Anche con il titolo “The Dusky Glen” o “We’ll meet beside” ecco il rifacimento di Robert Tannahill del “The brier bush” (There grows a bonie brier bush) pubblicato da Johnson nello “Scots Musical Museum” già attribuito alla penna di Robert Burns.
La melodia The Brier Bush è stata arrangiata da R. A. Smith

I
We’ll  meet beside the dusky glen, on yon burn side,
Where the bushes form a cosie den, on yon burn side;
Though the broomy knowes be green, and there we may be seen,
Yet we’ll meet—we’ll meet at e’en,  down by yon burn side.
II
I’ll lead thee to the birken bower, on yon burn side,
Sae sweetly wove wi’ woodbine flower, on yon burn side;
There the mavis we will hear and the blackbird singin’ clear, (1)
As on my arm ye lean, down by yon burn side.
III
Awa’, ye rude, unfeeling crew, frae yon burn side,
Those fairy scenes are no for you, by yon burn side;
There fancy smooths her theme,  by the sweetly murmuring stream,
And the rock-lodged echoes skim, down by yon burn side.
IV
Now the plantin’ taps are tinged wi’ goud, on yon burn side,
And gloamin’ draws her foggy shroud  o’er yon burn side;
Far frae the noisy scene,  I’ll through the fields alane,
There we’ll meet, my ain dear Jean, down by yon burn side.

I
We’ll  meet beside the dark glen,
on that stream side,
Where the bushes form a sheltered den,
on that stream side;
Though the broomy hillocks be green,
And there we may be seen,
Yet we’ll meet—we’ll meet at even,
down by that stream side.
II
I’ll lead thee to the birch bower,
on that stream side,
So sweetly wove with honeysuckle flower,
on that stream side;
There the thrush we will hear
and the blackbird singing clear, (1)
As on my arm you lean,
down by that stream side.
III
Away, you rude, unfeeling crew,
from that stream side,
Those fairy scenes are no for you,
by that stream side;
There fancy smooths her theme,
By the sweetly murmuring stream,
And the rock-lodged echoes skim,
down by that stream side
IV
Now the planting tops are tinged with gold,
on that stream side,
And twilight draws her foggy shroud
over that stream side;
Far from the noisy scene,
I’ll through the fields alone,
There we’ll meet, my dear Jean,
down by that stream side.

1) the verses reported in “The Song of Scotland” from the collection of John Glenn replace the “standard” ones
“There the busy prying eye, ne’er disturbs the lover’s joy,
While in ither’s arms they lie”

I
C’incontreremo davanti alla valle ombrosa
su quel lato del torrente,
dove i cespugli formano un riparo nascosto
su quel lato del torrente;
sebbene le collinette siano rinverdite di ginestre
e là potremmo essere visti
tuttavia c’incontreremo- c’incontreremo a sera
vicino a quel lato del torrente.
II
Ti condurrò al pergolato di betulla
su quel lato del torrente,
così dolcemente intrecciato di caprifoglio
su quel lato del torrente;
là il tordo udremo
e il merlo canterino
mentre tra le mie braccia giaci
vicino a quel lato del torrente.
III
Via, voi rude e insensibile gente
da quel lato del torrente
quelle scene incantate non sono per voi
da quel lato del torrente;
là il piacere placa la sua proposta
dal torrente che dolcemente mormora
e tra gli anfratti rocciosi l’eco rimbalza
vicino a quel lato del torrente.
IV
Ora le cime degli alberi sono tinte d’oro
su quel lato del torrente;
e il crepuscolo stende il velo di bruma
su quel lato del torrente;
lontano dal luogo chiassoso
attraverserò i campi da solo
c’incontreremo, mia cara Jean
vicino a quel lato del torrente.

(1) [i versi riportati in “The Song of Scotland” dalla raccolta di John Glenn sostituiscono quelli “standard”
là lo sguardo vivace dell’indiscreto, mai disturberà la gioia dell’amante mentre tra le braccia dell’altro si sdraiano]
