Loreena McKennitt reads Idries Shah’s book “The Sufi” (1964) and composes an album “The Mask and Mirror” (1994) in which she wonders about spirituality and religion.

In verità,
siamo una sola anima,
tu e io.
Appariamo e ci nascondiamo,
tu in me, io in te.
Ecco il significato profondo
della mia relazione con te.
Perchè non esistono nè tu, nè io
tra te e me .

NOTE

Sufi poetry

Sufi poetry is the secret language of mystical love, rich in symbolism and metaphor. The mirror is often taken as an example: God is the object and man (or the world) is the mirror.

Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī,  the greatest mystic poet of Persian literature, founder of the Brotherhood of the Whirling Dervishes (XIII century), writes:

Indeed,
we are one soul,
you and me.
In the show and hide
you in me, I am in you.
Here is the deeper meaning
of my relationship with you,
Because there is nor I, nor you.
between you and me.
We are the mirror,
as well as the face in it.
We are tasting the taste of eternity this minute.
We are pain and what cures pain.
We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours.

This poem is often cited as a sublime verse of love, good for the little cards in chocolates for Valentine’s Day in reality for Rumi, Love is of two types: the first is the Supreme Love that is God, the second is Love determined by God that is the reflection in us of the divine feeling (all the shades of love that bind us to each other, to all living creatures and to Nature)

The Mystic’s Dream

Scrive Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi

ovunque girino i suoi cammelli,

In the track “The Mystic’s Dream” Loreena writes a text that is Sufi poetry and composes a music that is Sufi music and Celtic music; together with the nay (the flute of Asia) the drums and the chordophones (of the sitar, dell’oud), the Küdum and the halile, but also the Gregorian chant of the monks rising at dawn, vibrating between the stone vaults of a cathedral in the Holy Land; the motif of this” voiceless song” is taken up by the bagpipes, so East and West merge into music.

Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi writes

My heart has become able
To take on all forms.
It is a pasture for gazelles,
For monks an abbey.
It is a temple for idols
And for whoever circumambulates it, the Kaaba.
It is the tablets of the Torah
And also the leaves of the Koran.
I believe in the religion of Love
Whatever direction its caravans may take,
For love is my religion and my faith.

So we are not surprised that “The Mystic’s Dream” became the main soundtrack of the TV movie “The Mists of Avalon”, based on the novel of the same name written by Marion Zimmer Bradley in 1983: the boat slips into the fog and carries Morgana to the magical kingdom of Avalon.

I
Sogno offuscato nella notte sulla Terra,
appeso a falce di luna crescente,
cantico muto, nella luce eterna,
canta all’alba imminente
NOTE

I
A clouded dream on an earthly night
hangs upon the crescent moon
a voiceless song in an ageless light
sings at the coming dawn
birds in flight are calling there
where the heart moves the stones
it’s there that my heart is longing
all for the love of you
II
A painting hangs on an ivy wall
nestled in the emerald moss
the eyes declare a truce of trust
and then it draws me far away
where deep in the desert twilight
sand melts in pools of the sky
when darkness lays her crimson cloak
your lamps (1) will call me home.
III
And so it’s there my homage’s due
clutched by the still of the night
and now I feel you move
every breath is full
so it’s there my homage’s due
clutched by the still of the night
even the distance feels so near
all for the love of you.
March 20, 1993 – spent a wonderful evening at a “cafe” in the middle of the desert … the address was “8 miles west of Rissani” … two brothers had created an exotic oasis with their families, palm trees and wheat patches … it felt like a settlement of Eskimos in an expanse of snow. We had been there in daylight and they invited us back to hear their music, but when we returned in the evening, we got lost trying to find our tracks among the many in the sand. We saw some lights ahead; the brothers were on top of their roof waving lanterns, signaling us home.

I DERVISCI

Ascolta,
un suono di conchiglie, di campanelli
si leva dalle acque.
Kabir dice:
«Fratelli,
è Dio in questo vaso,
in questo mio corpo»
