Musical homage to Padraic Colum, the father of the Irish Celtic Revival, Moon Cradle is a lyrical yet more dreamlike lullaby than the previous track in the album “Parallel Dreams” by Loreena McKennitt, the first of her albums with lyrics and music of her own composition.
I believe that the poem to which Mr. Colum refers is titled The Ballad of Downal Baun of which Loreena maintains only the first stanza, but I have not found other references to the text and its background.

Credo che la poesia a cui si riferisce s’intitoli The Ballad of Downal Baun di cui Loreena mantiene in pratica solo la prima strofa, ma non ho trovato altri riferimenti al testo e al suo background, così per ora mi limito alla traduzione in italiano sebbene ci siano dei passaggi un po’ oscuri.

1) il bastone del pastore: credo che si riferisca alla costellazione del Pastore, una tipica costellazione primaverile situata lontana dalla Via Lattea, detta anche Bootes è il guardiano delle due orse

2) è la stella della Sera o meglio il pianeta Venere detta anche la stella del pastore perchè quando si innalzava nel cielo (cioè era ben visibile poco prima del tramonto o allo spuntar dell’alba) era il momento per i pastori di rientrare e poi di uscire con il gregge -o di dare la sveglia al gregge, per iniziare la mungitura.
