“The Cooper o Cuddy”/We’ll hide the cooper behint the door, è una canzone tradizionale scozzese collezionata da Robert Burns e pubblicata nello SMM nel 1796, una canzone umoristica su storie di corna, con il bottaio nei panni del seduttore; la moglie nasconde l’amante prima dietro alla porta e poi sotto ad una cesta.
Senonchè dietro alla canzoncina c’è un aneddoto riferito al travestimento di un Drummond di Logie-Almond narrato nella canzone giacobita “There was a cooper” di James Hogg[1].

Un Drummond di Logie-Almond fedele alla causa giacobita si traveste da bottaio per sfuggire alla cattura degli Inglesi.
Scrive James Hogg “Si riferisce chiaramente a qualche impresa di Drummond di Logie-Almond quando si nascondeva. Deve aver impersonato un bottaio per ingannare il brav’uomo, probabilmente uno dei suoi stessi affittuari, ma sembra che si fosse fidato della signora; anzi, i versi insinuano piuttosto che anche lei si fosse fidata di lui. L’argomento sembra essere stato fertile per le muse dello Strathern, poiché esiste un’altra canzone apparentemente scherzosa sullo stesso argomento.“[2]

He coopit a coggie for our gudewife,
And, heigho! but he coopit it braw!
O wasna he a gallant young cooper ?

I primi due versi raccolti da Robert Burns sono identici a quelli di “There was a cooper”, ma tutta la storia è molto più esplicita

[2] Manifestly relates to some feat of Drummond’s of Logie- Almond when in hiding. He must have personated a cooper to deceive the goodman, likely one of his own tenants, but seems to have trusted the dame ; indeed, the verses rather insinuate that she likewise had trusted him. The subject seems to have been a fertile one for the muses of Stratherne, as there is another jocular song apparently on the same subject.
