I
Prendi l’edera e l’agrifoglio, donna,
e decora la tua casa
e prendi della birra scura
da bollire e aromatizzare;
ci danno buon umore,
perchè conosci le vecchie tradizioni,
che le vecchie e buone abitudine
l’uomo non disprezzi!
CORO
A Natale siate allegri
e ringraziate Dio di tutto,

e festeggiate con i vicini sfortunati,
grandi e piccini.

Si, per tutto l’anno abbiate
riguardo dei poveri,

e Dio manderà la fortuna
se terrete aperta la porta.

II
La buona frutta e l’abbondanza
fanno bene al tuo solaio
allora prepara un frutteto
e curalo spesso.
Tanto è il profitto,
massima è la soddisfazione;
alla soddisfazione per il profitto
pochi uomini mugugneranno.
NOTE
1) hull= Holly
2) nel Medioevo il liquido principale della grolla (o la coppa del wassail) era birra calda aromatizzata con mele e spezie. Le ricette d’epoca prevedono la cottura in forno delle mele ridotte successivamente in purea e l’aggiunta di noce moscata, zenzero e zucchero. Ricette d’epoca qui qui
3)un tempo nel solaio venivano messe certe derrate alimentari a stoccare o a seccare (ad esempio le mele): gli auguri di prosperità e abbondanza per il Nuovo Anno erano impetrati con i canti di questua rituali (wassail song) in particolare con la benedizione del frutteto
4) mickle = great
5) grutch = begrudge

I
Get ivy and hull (1), woman,
deck up thine house,
And take this same brawn (2)
for to seethe and to souse;
Provide us good cheer,
for thou knowest the old guise,
Old customs that good be,
let no man despise.
CHORUS
At Christmas be merry
and thank God of all,
And feast thy poor neighbours,
the great and the small.
Yea, all the year long have
an eye to the poor,
And God shall send luck
to keep open thy door.
II
Good fruit and good plenty
do well in thy loft (3),
Then lay for an orchard
and cherish it oft.
The profit is mickle (4),
the pleasure is much;
At pleasure with profit
few men will grutch (5).
