Ci dice Sam “It has been adapted from the singing of an old ferry boatman in the 1860s who sang as he rowed the collector of this song across the water in Port Royal, a set of sparsely inhabited islands in South Carolina. It was described in the notes as being in the dead of night, with one hooded oarsmen guided only by a small oil lamp chanting this song as he rowed. The similarity to Charon the ferryman of Hades carrying the dead souls across the Styx and Acheron in greek mythology was not lost on the collector. This song touches deep into that sense of parting from the realm of the living. It speaks of final journeys, our returning to the soil and the eventual confrontation and acceptance of death that we all one day make.”
Been a long time travelling here below
Been a long time travelling
Here on my own
Been a long time travelling here below
Going to lay this body down
Oh starlight, oh starlight
I'm walking through the starlight
Lay this body down
I see the moonlight
I'm walking through the moonlight
Lay this body down
Oh graveyard, oh graveyard
I'm walking through the graveyard
Lay this body down
I lie in the grave
I'm lying in the graveyard
Lay this body down
Lay This Body Down
Lay This Body Down
Lay This Body Down
Lay This Body Down
I go to judgement
In the evening of the day
Lay this body down
My soul and your soul
Will meet on that day
Lay this body down
Oh graveyard, oh graveyard
I'm walking through that graveyard
Lay this body down
Lay this body down
My soul and your soul
Will meet on that day
I see moonlight
Walking to the moonlight
Lay this body down

Long Time Travelling
