“Kiss me I’m IRISH” versus “Kiss me, I’m shitfaced”

Leggi in italiano

“Kiss me I’m Irish” is the catchphrase of St. Patrick’s Day, written on shirts and billboards or as a frequent call!
The custom probably stems from a popular legend, about the Judgment Stone in Blarney Castle.
Blarney is an Irish town in County Cork, famous for its castle or rather for a magical stone in the castle walls that gives the eloquence to those who kiss it, so the equation Irish (stone) kiss = blessing not it changes even if the term “stone” is omitted.

ROMANTIC IRISH

The auspicious silly ditty has become a song signed by Gaelic Storm (authors: Twigger, Murphy, Wehmeyer, Reid), the Santa Monica Irish folk rock band, which has become the staple (after the Titanic film) of the US Irish folk scene.

Gaelic StormBring Yer Wellies (2006)
I
Old song and old stories
They keep us alive
Without our past
We would never survive
I am my island
My island is me
So you know what you can do
if you dont like what you see
CHORUS
Kiss me, I’m Irish
I am the wild rover (6)
My eyes they are smiling
And I’m seldom sober (1)
I like my whiskey
And I love to dance
So if you’re feeling as lucky as me,
take a chance
And kiss me I’m Irish
II
My heart beats a jig
And me blood, it flows green
I’ve been a rogue and a rambler (6)
From ocean to sea (2)
And I like a Bevy (3)
Now and then (7) this I’ll never deny
But I only drink on the days of the week
that end with a ‘y’ (4)

I’m no saint I’m no sinner
Of that theres no doubt
I’ll tell you the truth
I am the one that your grandmother
warned you about

III
Dublin, Milwaukee, Cleavlend and Cork, Kerry, Chicago and my New York
Belfast and Boston, Donegal and DC (5)
Raise you glasses
and sing, sing, sing, sing with me:

NOTE
1) quotes from lines taken from popular Irish folk songs: I am the wild rover, My eyes they are smiling,  I’m seldom sober
2) America-Ireland
3) bevy =lager
4) that is, all seven daysi
5) DC is the district of Colombia, but “the District”, or “D.C.”, means the capital of the USA
6) the rover is an adventurer looking for emotions; I’m a rambler, I’m a gambler is a phrase of the song  The Moonshiner, more generally  to indicate a free spirit
7) the ladder of priorities of a typical Irishman is First: drink, Second: drink in company, Third: drink in the company of a girl

PUNK IRISH

Dropkick Murphys – Blackout, 2003  “Kiss me, I’m shitfaced”

I
I play in a band,
we’re the best in the land

We’re big in both Chelsea and France
I play one mean  guitar
and then score at the bar

There’s a line of chicks
waiting for their chance

So come on now honey,
I’ll make you feel pretty

These other gals (1)
mean nothing to me

Let’s finish these drinks
and be gone for the night

‘Cause I’m more
than a handful, you’ll see

[Chorus:]
So kiss me, I’m shitfaced
I’m soaked, I’m soiled and brown (2)
in the trousers, she kissed me
And I only bought her one round
II
I can bench press a car,
I’m an ex football star

with degrees from both Harvard and Yale
Girls just can’t keep up,
I’m a real love machine

I’ve had far better sex while in jail
I’ve designed the Sears Tower (3),
I make two grand an hour

I cook the world’s best duck flambe
I’ll take the pick of the litter,
girls jockey for me

I don’t need these lines to get laid
III
I’m a man of the night,
a real ladies delight

See my figure was chiseled from stone
One more for the gal
then I’ll escort her home

Come last call,
I’m never alone

I’ve a house on the hill
with a red water bed

That puts Hugh Heffnor’s mansion (4) to shame
With girls by the pool
and Italian sports cars

I’m just here in this dump for the game
IV
Ahh, fuck it. Who am I shitting?
I’m a pitiful sight,
and I ain’t all that bright

I’m definitely not chiseled from stone
I’m a cheat and a liar,
no woman’s desire

I’ll probably die cold and alone
But just give me a chance,
‘cause deep down inside

I swear I got a big heart of gold
I’m a monogamous man,
no more one night stands

Come on, honey, let me take you home
NOTE
1) gal is an Irish colloquial term for girl and has no negative connotations, a term often used in sea (or shanty) songs
2) he prides himself on being a type who does little washing, because his mutant / pants bear traces of shit, a very punk-fashion situation
3) Willis Tower, at the time when they wrote the lyrics again “Sears Tower”  the skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois probably mentioned because it was the tallest building in the world from 1973 to 1998.
4) Hugh Marston “Hef” Hefner is an American publisher, founder of the famous erotic magazine Playboy and head of the Playboy Empire
