Handy me boys (me girls), so handy

“Handy, Me Boys” is a sea shanty (for hauling) and a typical example of improvised shantyman compositions based on “cliché verses of chanteying“.
It is the version (from the singing of Capt. Richard Maitland) in Doerflinger’s book (Songs of the Sailor and Lumberman, New York, 1972) which has become the “standard” Folk Revival version.
Hulton Clint writes: “”This sort of part-improvised, part-cliche lining out of verse is, I think, an old trait of African-American song, down into later forms such as Blues and Rap. This chantey begins with a sort of introduction, which probably functioned to remind of or teach the refrain– seeing as how it lacks a really distinct opening verses that might otherwise inform the chorus as to exactly what song was being sung. Hugill offers several different melodic variants of the “So Handy, Me Boys” chantey. His main one, here, does not correspond exactly to any in other collections that I’ve seen. It is, however, very similar to the one given by Terry, with the exception that Terry’s is in a 6/8 meter and Hugill’s is in 2/2.“

Scrive Hulton Clint “Questo tipo di versi in parte improvvisati, in parte versi stereotipati è, penso, un vecchio tratto della canzone afroamericana, che ritroviamo in forme più tarde come il Blues e il Rap. Questo chantey inizia con una sorta di introduzione, che probabilmente ha la funzione di ricordare o insegnare il ritornello – visto che manca un versetto di apertura distinto che avrebbe altrimenti reso noto al coro il titolo della canzone. Hugill offre diverse varianti melodiche di “So Handy, Me Boys”. Quella principale non corrisponde esattamente a nessuna delle altre collezioni che ho visto, ma è molto simile a quella data da Terry, eccetto che in Terry è in 6/8 mentre in Hugill è in 2/2.”

(1) yard= A main horizontal timber in the rigging of sailing ships to which a squaresail, lateensail or lugsail is bent. For the maneuvers sailors assemble on the yards as little birds on the wires of light (absolutely forbidden for those who suffer from vertigo!)
2) a generic, cliché verses of chanteying
3) in Doerflinger: “Oh, We’re the gang that’ll shove her through”
(4) the shantyman is making irony, the meaning of “in hand” becomes “handsy”, one that beats strongly for futile reasons

(1) yard= pennone; è l’asta orizzontale messa in croce con l’albero che regge le vele e prende il nome dalla relativa vela. Per le manovre i marinai si assiepano sui pennoni come uccellini sui fili della luce (assolutamente vietato per coloro che soffrono di vertigini!)
2) tipico verso stereotipato delle shanties
3) in Doerflinger: “Oh, We’re the gang that’ll shove her through”
(4) lo shantyman sta facendo dell’ironia, il significato di “alla mano” diventa “manesco”, cioè uno che picchia forte per futili motivi
