The work made for the Lord of the Rings, stimulated Roma Ryan to devise an Elvish language called Loxian, with which she wrote three songs on the Amarantine album (2005) and two others on the Dark Sky Island album (2015)
Already in her first compositions Enya (see The Celts) had hypothesized the migration of the Celts in space towards Aldebaran, the Alpha Tauri in the constellation of Taurus – placed in correspondence of the eye, a very bright star in the star system relatively close to ours, we distinguish it in the starry winter sky near Orion. In Antiquity, Aldebaran was a star associated with the cycle of the seasons (its heliacal rising marked Beltaine’s Celtic festival)
Roma writes about Amarantine album “We have journeyed from Aldebaran, the track that tells of the future migration of the Celts through space, to the three Loxian songs of Amarantine, which were born of Aldebaran. In Aldebaran, the lyrics are in Enya’s native tongue — Gaeilge — and so the Irish language is brought forth to play its part in the future. The three Loxian songs — ‘The River Sings’, ‘Water Shows The Hidden Heart’ and ‘Less Than A Pearl’ — are dear to me as, to the wordsmith, one of the most exciting elements of all is that of the creation of a word.
Not only vocalizations or meaningless sounds but an articulated language (a so-called artistic language) corresponding also to an alphabet.
Less Than A Pearl – Heah Viiya
Loxian calls Earth [Loxian chiama Terra]
Dreams & Serenity: Instrumental version
Out of night has come the day. Out of night, our small earth. Our words drift away. We call out into the distance… Less than a pearl in a sea of stars, It may be our words become lost. We call out into the distance… |

The River Sings – Ea Hymm Llay Hey
I Our words go beyond the moon. Our words go into the shadows. The river sings the endlessness (1). We write of our journey through night. We write in our aloneness. We want to know the shape of eternity. Chorus Who knows the way it is? Who knows what time will not tell us? II Mountains, solitude and the moon until the journey’s end (2)? The river holds the lost road of the sky; the shape of eternity? III Where is the beginning? Where is the end? Why did we fall into days? Why are we calling out into the endlessness? |

Water Shows The Hidden Heart – Syoombrraya
Roma writes: “This is a song telling the story of a man who is looking for whom he loves and has lost. It describes his emotional journey in images – cities, islands, valleys. Memories and emotions take a physical form, a visualization. The lyric itself is adapted from a book of the same name which describes these places, this journey. …he looks into the eyes of the water and sees his own eyes, looking. They reflect everything, these waters, even the hidden heart.” (in Amarantine Promotional Box, 2005)

all these fantastic and imaginary cities remind me of the book “Invisible Cities” (le Città Invisibili) by Italo Calvino, and refer me in particular to the artist’s notebook of Angela Betta Casale
1) Roma writes: There are two cities that carry the name The City of Constellations. The first is in the heights and is the home of the Loxians, the astronomers, the starkeepers. The second is in the valley and is the home of the Valley-dwellers, the scribes, the myth-minders. Both these peoples want to know their place within the night, they want to know they are not alone.
