From the album “Watermark” (1989), Evening Falls was released as the second single (after the resounding success of Orinoco Flow). On the contrary, this song is more meditative and disturbing and has a gothic story as a background. A woman living in America dreams every night of wandering in an unknown house. When she moves to England she comes across her dream house; intrigued she approached, but the people who live there are afraid of her because they believe her a ghost, that had haunted the house in the past.
The black and white video is extremely distressing, full of symbolism and memories of the past. It seems to describe an abandoned house in which the one who had lived there (most probably a few centuries before) returns to visit “taking possession” of the one who dreams. Among the various images a barn owl flying throug a stone opening, attracted by the light of a candle. The passage of Death extinguishes the flame of the candle.
The song and the video recall the revenant ballads of the Celtic tradition.

I When the evening falls and the daylight is fading (1), from within me calls – could it be I am sleeping? For a moment I stray (2), then it holds me completely. Close to home – I cannot say. Close to home – feeling so far away. II As I walk the room there before me a shadow from another world where no other can follow. Carry me to my own, to where I can cross over (3) Close to home – I cannot say. Close to home – feeling so far away. III Forever searching; never right, I am lost in oceans of night. Forever hoping I can find memories, those memories I left behind. IV Even though I leave (4) will I go on believing that this time is real – am I lost in this feeling? Like a child passing through, never knowing the reason. I am home – I know the way. I am home- feeling oh! so far away. |
NOTE
1) twilight is a middle time, a threshold that allows the passage between the Worlds [il crepuscolo è un tempo di mezzo, una soglia che permette il passaggio tra i Mondi]
2) the mind falters and no longer distinguishes the dream from reality [la mente vacilla e non distingue più il sogno dalla realtà]
3) the phrase lends itself to a double interpretation, it could be the spirit that invokes the mortal to help it, but also vice versa and the ambiguity of the situation increases its charm [la frase si presta ad una duplice interpretazione potrebbe essere lo spirito a invocare il mortale affinchè l’aiuti, ma anche viceversa e l’ambiguità della situazione ne accresce il fascino]
4) is the woman who has to wake up or the spirit that must return to the Other World?
