THE DEASIL CHARM
Diana Gabaldon writes in “The Fiery Cross” –the Outlander saga- a protection spell for a baby locked in a small heart-shaped tin brooch
Jocasta stooped to the kindling basket and groped among the bits of debris, coming up with a long pine twig in her hand, the bark still on it.
“Take that,” she commanded, holding it out toward Brianna. “Light the end of it from the hearth, and walk ye round the bairn three times. Sunwise, mind!”
Mystified, Brianna took the stick and thrust it into the fire, then did as she was bid, holding the flaming twig well away from both the makeshift cradle and her blue wool skirts. Jocasta tapped her foot rhythmically on the floor, and chanted, half under her breath.
She spoke in Gaelic, but slowly enough that Brianna could make out most of the words.
“Wisdom of serpent be thine,
Wisdom of raven be thine,
Wisdom of valiant eagle.
Voice of swan be thine,
Voice of honey be thine,
Voice of the Son of the stars.
Sain of the fairy-woman be thine,
Sain of the elf-dart be thine,
Sain of the red dog be thine.
Bounty of sea be thine,
Bounty of land be thine,
Bounty of the Father of Heaven.
Be each day glad for thee,
No day ill for thee,
A life joyful, satisfied.”

Da “”La croce di Fuoco” della saga di Outlander, scritto da Diana Gabaldon, capitolo 42 “L’incantesimo del deasil“ alla pagina 648 l’autrice riporta uno spell di protezione racchiudendolo in una piccola spilla di stagno a forma di cuore.
“Contro gli spiriti” rispose Jocasta “tienilo appuntato al grembiulino del bambino- sempre sul dietro bada bene -e nessuno degli Old Folk lo disturberà mai”.
E l’anziana Jocasta spiega alla giovane mamma Brianna come procedere con il rituale dandole un bastoncino di legno secco
“Prendi questo, accedine la punta al fuoco e gira attorno al bebè per tre volte.In senso orario, mi raccomando!”
Jocasta battè ritmicamente il piede a terra e cantilenò a bassa voce in gaelico
“Che la saggezza del serpente sia con te,
che la saggezza del corvo sia con te,
la saggezza dell’aquila valorosa.
Che la voce del cigno sia tua,
che la voce del miele sia tua,
la voce del Figlio delle Stelle.
Che la protezione della fata sia su di te,
che la protezione dell’elfo sia su di te,
la protezione del cane rosso.
Che l’abbondanza del mare sia tua,
Che l’abbondanza della terra sia tua,
l’abbondanza del Padre dei Cieli.

The spell comes from afar, it is an English translation of a Scottish Gaelic blessing from Alexander Carmicheal’s Carmina Gadelica, a book widely consulted by the author: “I used small bits of several of the invocation and prayers from this huge collection, as seemed appropriate to the occasion”
Lo spell viene da lontano è una traduzione in inglese di una benedizione in gaelico scozzese già riportato nel Carmina Gadelica di Alexander Carmicheal, libro ampiamente consultato dall’autrice: “Ho usato piccoli frammenti di molte invocazioni e preghiere di questa vasta raccolta, quando sembravano appropriati per l’occasione“

Traduzione italiano Che la saggezza del serpente sia con te, che la saggezza del corvo sia con te, la saggezza dell’aquila valorosa. Gabaldon only adds a triplet tying it to the small and large gods of the Ancestors
La Gabaldon aggiunge solo una terzina legandola alle piccole e grandi divinità degli Antenati
Sain of the fairy-woman be thine,
Sain of the elf-dart be thine,
Sain of the red dog be thine.
Deasil means walking in a circle in a clockwise direction (the direction of the sun) and precisely the walker turns three times (even the prayer is in triplets) around the baby’s cradle using the fire (and its wreathes of smoke) as a catalyst element. The Outlander saga is full of these small spells because they were still widely practiced by the Highlanders during the eighteenth century.
Deasil significa camminare in cerchio in senso orario (il verso del sole) e per l’appunto la deambulazione si svolge per tre volte (anche la preghiera è in terzine) attorno alla culla del bambino usando il fuoco (e il fume che si sprigiona) come elemento catalizzatore. Di questi piccoli incantesimi è pieno la saga di Outlander perchè erano ancora ampiamente praticati dagli Scozzesi delle Montagne durante il Settecento.
