LA MANDORLA SACRA
Sheela-na-Gig
There is no rose of such virtue

The Marian cult flourished in the Middle Ages through a lot of devotional and pilgrimage songs when part of Christian thought went to re-evaluate the female figure (or at least its mystical version) in the wake of the rampant cult of the woman in feudal courts. The subject is complex but it is certainly during the twelfth century that the new concept of “courtly love” is spread in the poetic of the Occitan troubadours by the mystic power of love (the perfectibility of the soul of the “knight” devoted to the service of his lady).

In the womb of Mary the mystery depicted by the Mystical Mandorla is fulfilled, a gigantic vagina that contains the “Christ in glory” represented in many illuminated codices, medieval paintings and sculptures: the almond is seed, symbol of life; as geometric shape it is the intersection of two spheres, the divine and the human.

The rose is the uterus of the Mother, the cup-womb of Salvation (and regeneration), the rose that guards the secret is the manifestation of the Divine Feminine. Thus the Sheela-na-Gig girls show their genitals from church capitals and the walls of medieval castles in England, Ireland, Wales, western France, northern Spain and Scotland (even the historical period is well defined between 1080 and 1250 ). Icons of fertility (genius loci) carved mostly on the keystone of the portals to keep away evil or on the outer walls to guard the road.

Sheela-na-Gig

The Sheela-na-Gig were interpreted as protective vaginas, as were the Paleolithic ones carved into the rock, common source of all humanity, symbolic origin of the world, the triumph of life over death. The sacred triangle, the generating power of the world, but also the threshold between the physical and the spiritual world. The symbol still had to be very powerful if manifestly exposed despite Christianity being a deeply sexist and misogynist religion, hostile towards sex (the Catholic Church taught that sex was to be used only for procreation not for pleasure)

There is no rose of such virtue

The manuscript MS O.3.58 of Cambridge, kept at Trinity College (commonly known as “The Trinity Roll”) contains thirteen polyphonic songs with music on five-row staves and dates back to the early decades of the 1400s, the first source of the English polyphonic Christmas carols!

Non c’è una rosa di tal virtù
come colei che racchiude Gesù.
Poichè é questa rosa che conteneva
cielo e terra in stretto sito (1).
Per quella rosa possiamo ben vedere
Dio in tre persone.
Gli angeli cantano ai pastori:
“Gloria a Dio nell’alto dei cieli”.
Abbandoniamo dunque i piaceri terreni
e assistiamo alla sua nascita gioiosa.
Alleluia, della mirabile forma, rallegriamoci,
alleluia

There is no rose of such virtue
as is the rose that bare Jesu.
For in this rose contained was
heaven and earth in little space (1)
By that rose we may well see
that he is God in persons three.
The angels sungen the shepherds to:
“Gloria in excelsis Deo.”
Leave we all this worldly mirth,
and follow we this joyful birth.
Alleluia, res miranda, pares forma, gaudeamus,
Alleluia
1) the Mystical Mandorla
