Il cuculo è un uccello che ha fatto dell’inganno la sua virtù: non costruisce il suo nido perchè ha escogitato un sistema per far covare e allevare la sua prole dagli altri uccelli!
La femmina depone un solo uovo in ogni nido da aprile in poi camuffando le uova in modo che assomiglino a quelle della specie “ospite”. Alla schiusa il piccolo del cuculo si sbarazza delle altre uova non ancora schiuse, rimanendo l’unico ospite. I genitori adottivi vengono ingannati da questo comportamento e nutrono il cuculo come se fosse proprio.

In Francia questo comportamento del cuculo ha portato alla nascita del termine “cocu” per indicare una persona il cui partner sia infedele. Con il medesimo significato in Inghilterra si usa il termine “cuckold”, derivato dal francese “cocu” più il suffisso peggiorativo -ald.

The cuckoo is a bird that has made its virtue in deception: it does not build its nest because it has devised a system to have its offspring hatched and raised by other birds!
The female lays a single egg in each nest from April onwards disguising the eggs so that they resemble those of the “host” species. Just born it gets rid of the other eggs not yet hatched, remaining the only guest. The adoptive parents are deceived by this behavior and feed the cuckoo as if it were their own.

In France this behavior of the cuckoo led to the birth of the term “cocu” to indicate a person whose partner is unfaithful. With the same meaning in England the term “cuckold” is used, derived from the French “cocu” plus the pejorative suffix -ald.

La stampa di James Aird nella sua Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 1 (1782, pg. 66) include un’interessante quarta varietà, non trovata in altre fonti. Matt Seattle (1987, 1994) crede che il pezzo originale sia stato una misura scozzese in re minore con il titolo “Come Ashore Jolly Tar (with) Your Trousers On,” ma nota che esistono molte versioni di questa melodia, con variazioni piuttosto sostanziali tra di loro, in tonalità maggiore e minore (sottolinea che l’arrangiamento settecentesco di William Vicker dalla Northumbria è evidentemente in minore, nonostante la chiave). Il titolo appare in numerose collezioni di danza del XVIII e XIX secolo, e nella lista di canzoni e danze popolari della Northumbria di Henry Robson, che ha pubblicato c. 1800.

James Aird’s printing in his Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 1 (1782, pg. 66) includes an interesting fourth strain, not found in other sources. Matt Seattle (1987, 1994) believes the tune to originally have been a Scots Measure in D Minor with the title “Come Ashore Jolly Tar (with) Your Trousers On,” but notes that many versions of this tune exist, with quite substantial variation between them, in major and minor keys (he remarks that the Northumbrian William Vicker’s late 18th century setting is evidently minor, despite the key signature). The title appears in numerous 18th and 19th century dance collections, and made Henry Robson’s list of popular Northumbrian song and dance tunes, which he published c. 1800.^[3]

Questa versione testuale (probabilmente già in giro ai tempi di Shakespeare) è un tipico contrasto amoroso a botta e risposta in cui l’uomo attenta alla virtù della fanciulla, come già osservato in altre occasioni, questo tipo di canti sono una “prova generale di fertilità” a scopo matrimoniale. Contrariamente alla versione scozzese il rapporto si conclude non con una gravidanza inopportuna, ma con un matrimonio.

“Il contesto potrebbe essere una sorta di prova generale, durante la quale i ragazzi e le ragazze, dilettandosi con il sesso, danno prova della loro fertilità (a scopo matrimoniale); un tempo infatti la fertilità della coppia era imprescindibile dall’unione matrimoniale e andare a catturare uccelli tra i cespugli era un buon pretesto.” (tratto da qui)

This textual version (probably from Shakespeare time) is a typical amorous contrast in which the man tests to the virtue of a girl, as already observed on other occasions, it is “general proof of fertility ” for marriage purposes. Contrary to the Scottish version the relationship ends not with an inappropriate pregnancy, but with a marriage.

“The context could be a sort of general test, during which the boys and girls, delighting in sex, give proof of their fertility (for matrimonial purposes): once in fact the fertility of the couple was essential to the marriage union and going to catch birds in the bushes was a good excuse. ” (see more)
