Away in a manger, The Craddle Song

I come from Heaven to tell)

[English translation]
“Away in a manger” is a sweet Christmas lullaby whose first strophes were (erroneously) attributed to Martin Luther and published in 1884.
From Richard Hill’s extensive research we learn that it was James Ramsey Murray in a reprint of 1887 (in Dainty Songs for Little Ladys and Lasses Song # 113) to attribute the text to Luther and it was always Murray to title the song “Luther’s Cradle Hymn”: he did it for modesty wrapping up his hymn with the “ancient tradition” even if it was probably another piece of Luther to inspire the lullaby (Balulalow, I come from Heaven to tell)

The third stanza appears in print only in 1892 in the “Gabriels Vineyard songs” and even in this case the attribution is uncertain.
The melody, evidently not of Luther, was attributed by a publisher to “Carl Mueller” and later claimed by Murray himself as Mueller.

THE CRADLE SONG

A hundred years later another melody was composed for the now hugely popular song “Away in a manger” by William J. Kikpatrick (1839-1921), a reference figure of the Methodist church in Philadelphia, with the title ” The Cradle Song “; this is the most popular version especially in the British Isles. An additional melody that is also used in medley is “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton

I
Away in a manger,
no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down
His sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky
looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus,
asleep on the hay.
II
The cattle are lowing,
the poor Baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus,
no crying He makes;
I love Thee, Lord Jesus (1),,
look down from the sky
And stay by my side
till morning is nigh.
III
Be near me, Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever,
and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children
in Thy tender care,
And take us to Heaven (2)
to live with Thee there.
FOOTNOTES
1) from the description of the newborn Jesus we pass to a tender pray of good night
2) Paradise is no longer a remote region of the earth but an indefinite place in the galaxy

Orla Fallon  The Cradle Song tune (William J. Kikpatrick)

I
Lontano in una mangiatoia,
senza un lettino per dormire,
Gesù Bambino posava
la sua dolce testolina.
Le stelle nel cielo luminoso
contemplavano in basso dove giace
Gesù Bambino
addormentato sulla paglia.
II
Il bue muggisce
e il Bambinello si sveglia,
ma Gesù Bambino
non emette un grido;
ti amo Signore Gesù (1),
che guardi la terra dal cielo
e stai al mio fianco
notte e giorno.
III
Stammi accanto, Signore Gesù,
ti chiedo di stare
accanto a me per sempre,
e di amarmi ti prego:
benedici tutti i cari bambini
con le tue cure affettuose
e portaci in Paradiso (2)
per vivere con te lassù.
