Handsome Nell/O Once I lov’d a bonnie lass

Biographers have tracked down all Robert Burns‘s gallant adventures, often immortalized by a song, “Handsome Nell” was the first of the series, his first fifteen year old flame! Robbie met Nelly Kilpatrick of Dalrymple in 1774: some sources write that she was the daughter of farmers, others say that the father was the blacksmith of the village.
We know the background of their love-story from an autobiographical letter.

“August 2, 1787
This kind of life [as a tenant farmer’s son] –the cheerless gloom of a hermit with the unceasing moil of a galley-slave, brought me to my sixteenth year; a little before which period I first committed the sin of rhyme. You know our country custom of coupling a man and woman together as partners in the labors of harvest. In my fifteenth autumn, my partner was a bewitching creature, a year younger than myself…. Among her other love-inspiring qualities, she sung sweetly; and it was her favourite reel to which I attempted giving an embodied vehicle in rhyme…. Thus with me began love and poetry; which at times have been my only, and till within the last twelve months, have been my highest enjoyment.”

And again Burns writes about the song: “This song was the first of my performances, and done at an early period in my life, when my heart glowed with honest warm simplicity – unacquainted and uncorrupted with the ways of a wicked world. It has many faults; but I remember I composed it in a wild enthusiasm of passion; … my heart melts – my blood sallies, at the remembrance.“

So accomplice the harvest tradition of going to frolicking in the full moon nights between the sheaves and the young age, Robbie falls in love!
Besides being pretty and modest Nelly had a nice voice and loved to sing and Robbie wrote to her a song by borrowing a melody that she really liked to sing. According to his statements, the heart-beating felt for Nell prompted Robbie to write in rhyme!

E ancora Burns scrive in merito alla canzone. “Questa canzone è stata la prima dei miei componimenti, e fatta in un periodo precoce della mia vita, quando il mio cuore brillava di onesta, calda semplicità – ignaro e incontaminato dai modi di un mondo malvagio. Ha molti difetti; ma ricordo di averla composto in un impeto sfrenato di passione;… il mio cuore si scioglie – il mio sangue si colora nel ricordo. “

Complice la tradizione durante la mietitura di andare ad amoreggiare nelle notti di luna piena tra i covoni e la giovane età, Robbie si prende una bella cotta! “Handsome Nell” first appears in the poet’s Commonplace book, however, it was not published until after his death, in James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum (1803). Burns emphasizes that external beauty is not enough to love, better a certain way of moving with grace, and some moral qualities such as modesty, honesty and innocence its are to be sought in a girl; that is the stereotype of the beautiful fairytale girl, who betrays the young age of the protagonist (but which of us women is not looking for Prince Charming?) The closing verses are absolutely perfect:
For absolutely in my breast
She reigns without controul.

The traditional melody is called “I am a man unmarried” ant it is played slowly – not as a reel.
