Gabriel’ s message carol

Gabriel’ s message

[English translation]”Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen” is a Basque Christmas song about the Annunciation whose melody follows the medieval carol “Angelus ad Virginem”.

In the nineteenth century the text was translated into English by Sabine Baring-Gould, which reduced to four its original strophes: it is usually sung by the chorales following the arrangement of Edgar Pettman published in his “Modern Christmas Carols” (1892).  We have a lot of versions from the great interpreters of the Celtic and rock scene.

I
“Salve” disse “a te, Maria, umile fanciulla,
Dama favorita dal cielo, Gloria!
II
tuo figlio sarà Emmanuele, come predetto dai profeti
Dama favorita dal cielo, Gloria!”
III
NOTE
4) oppure : And everyone throughout the world forever saved

I
The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;
‘all hail’, said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary,
Most highly favour’d lady, Gloria!
II
‘For known a blessed mother thou shalt be,
All generations laud and honour thee,
Thy son shall be Emmanuel (1), by seers foretold,
Most highly favour’d lady, Gloria!”
III
Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her heard,
“‘To me be as it pleaseth god (2)'” she said, “my soul shall laud and magnify (3) his holy name,
Most highly favour’d lady, Gloria!”
IV
Of her, Emmanuel the christ, was born,
In Bethlehem, all on a christmas morn,
And christian folk throughout the world will ever say (4):
“Most highly favour’d lady Gloria!”
FOOTNOTES
It was in the IV century AD that the Annunciation to Mary, not having a certain date in the Gospels, was fixed by the Catholic Church on March 25 (9 months before Christmas of Jesus), and until the High Middle Ages, this date marked the beginning of the new year (which also started with the spring equinox also in the calendar of Ancient Rome).
1) Isaiah calls Palestine the Land of Emmanuel (which in Hebrew means God is with us)
2) The Annunciation is based on the assumption that Mary was free to choose whether to consent or not to the divine will in spite of all the Prophecies.
3) from The Magnificat: My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
4) or : And everyone throughout the world forever saved

 GABRIEL’S MESSAGE Sting in Russians

it is a single taken from the first solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles, released in June 1985; the video is shot in the darkness and with only one light from above; Sting stands out like a black shadow against a leaden background surrounded by a circle of angels children (dressed in pure Victorian style) barefoot in the snow .

A few little black angel praying with clasped hands and the face of Sting illuminated on the last notes. Disturbing is the electronic loop that recall the sound of a helicopter’s blades; in my opinion the video is against the politics of the cold war to compare with “Russians love their children too” (a more than prophetic song since the Malta summit was held in 1989). With the debut of his solo career (The Dream of the Blue Turtles) Sting also fielded his social commitment (Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Live Aid

Folk Revival

Moya Brennan’s interpretation in An Irish Christmas 2006 is more nocturnal: it seems to relive the scenes of Franco Zeffirelli’s screenplay, Jesus of Nazareth (1977), with Maria who sleeps and is awakened by the wind that opens the window. The angel is only light and the scare of Mary is slowly followed by curiosity. The intonation of Moya underlines the mystery of the event, its supernatural character, underlined by the beat of the drum and the pinches of the strings and the harp. The acceptance of Mary “Let the Lord take place within me” is also the descent of the Holy Spirit, the feminine principle of God, of fruitfulness and abundance, and Mary gathers the light that enters from the open window.

"The Annunciation," Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1898
“The Annunciation,” Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1898
